Being anxious when starting school is completely fine. You can be anxious about anything. Going to a different school, not knowing your peers, who to hang out with, etc. can all be on your mind. Don’t worry too much because there are probably a lot of other new students, or other people who feel anxious as well.
We asked teens about the advice they’d give people at the beginning of the school year, and this is what they said:
Be yourself! You will attract people like you and that can be good for you.
As much as being a part of the “crowd” can be fun, stick to finishing school work on time and think about your future before anything else.
Enjoy high school while you can but also be careful.
Surround yourself with good people.
Get on your teacher’s good side. They may be more lenient and nicer if they like you.
Be prepared – have school supplies ready, like pencils, notebooks, folders, binders, water bottles, mechanical pencils, pens, paper, etc.
Be familiar with people you have classes with
Stay out of trouble!
Your grades should be a priority.
Have good hygiene – don’t come to school smelly – brush your teeth, put on deodorant, wash your clothes, and shower please!
Be nice to your teachers – they don’t get paid enough to deal with obnoxious, loud, unfunny kids.
Do your homework and try your best to get grades you like.
Make new friends because it will make the school year better.
Don’t always participate in drama in your friend groups.
Do extracurricular activities or clubs – it’s a good way to get to know people with similar interests to you.
If you’re dating someone don’t let it take over your grades or social life.
